Yeah, we’re picky.

High quality lumber starts with high quality logs.
A constant flow of alder and maple logs enters the mill daily. All logs are first weighed, then transported to the log yard where they are unloaded and rolled out to be individually inspected and measured. We work with our suppliers to help them deliver logs that enhance the quality and value of our final product.

Sustainable alder is insurance for the future.

Cascade Hardwood LLC is committed to a healthy sustainable alder market. Part of this commitment is providing forest managers and suppliers with information. Cascade Hardwood actively educates logging operators in the unique characteristics and handling requirements necessary to bring the highest value product to market.

Our log purchasing staff gladly provides suppliers with opportunities to tour our facilities to increase understanding of alder hardwood. The tours allow suppliers to engage our highly qualified log scalers, equipment operators and lumber graders in discussions to increase the understanding of what is involved in bringing this valuable resource to market in the best possible way.

Managed forest initiatives.

In 1988 Oregon State University began the Hardwood Silvicultural Cooperative. The objective of the Hardwood Silvicultural Cooperative is to provide scientifically accurate data on the growth and yield of managed Alder.

The data collected over the past 21 years are beginning to show very different growth and yields between managed Alder stands and unmanaged stands. The present perceptions of 15,000 to 20,000 board feet per acre yields and 45-year rotation age for unmanaged Alder stands are being rewritten. Results beginning to emerge from the Hardwood Silvicultural Cooperative are impressive including much faster growth, higher yields per acre, and higher log quality.

This picture is one of the 26 variable density plots contained in the Hardwood Silvicultural Cooperative study. The plot is 11 years old and is being pruned. There are many stems over 8" diameter at breast height and 60 feet tall.
